Jobs creation too slow to help the recovery With 14.6 Million unemployed and 11.2 Million underemployed & stopped looking, we have 25.8 Million or 16.5% of the 156 Million workforce out of work. 156 Million is, itself, about 50% of the total U.S. population of 309 Million.

Here are the big, simple numbers: U.S. population = 309M; Workforce = 156M; Actually working = 130M; Unemployed/underemployed = 26M. That’s 26 million!! We have offshored so much manufacturing capacity, we no longer have business cycle (supply/demand) recessions

For a number of reasons, I haven’t been blogging much: First off, I’m still in post-semester recovery mode. This happens every Spring - after the semester is over, I need a week or two to decompress, clean out the detritus of the year from my office, and kick back a bit before refocusing on my summer research goals. This time around, between the timing of exams and faculty meetings, it was worse than usual.
